switching to runlevel 5 did not mount hdb5 or hdb6. I had to manually edit /etc/fstab. Not knowing how to open/edit that file from console, I had to boot again from a cd to get a graphical ui, but got that done too. (command couldn't find emacs, perhaps I needed to do a symlink).
