You say you have SLES 9. Then you do not have to follow this so called "cool solution"
Sles has got a yast module for making a installation server.
Use that one. It's the least hassle :-)
I've made my own (SLES 9) installation server by: copy the first cd to a directory, rename media.1 to media.0 copy the rest of the cd's to the same directory.
Then you can use nfs or ftp to access the server...
But then one can get into problems when adding a install source in yast. The only one you get is CORE but not SLES (or the other way around) but by editing /var/adm/YaST/InstSrcManager/IS_CACHE_0x0000000x it's possible to fix that.
But when making a inst. server for e.g. SuSE 9.3 then you just have to export the mounted iso (of the dvd.. if using cds then one can copy the cd's to a directory)

Okay, great! I originally tried it the way that you are suggesting, but I ran into what sounds like the problem you mention with adding an install source in yast. I think I only got SLES. Can you give me the specifics on what I need to edit in .../IS_CACHE_0x0000000x or point me to where I can read up on these files? Thanks for your help! I'm going to try it right now. Allison
