To all of you - thanks for the advice. My reason for wanting to close the lid is to allow me to stack things on top of the laptop (trivial reason, I know, but still...). So depressing the lid switch with a weight accomplishes nothing for me. As for heat build-up - the laptop is under extremely minimal demands, and is an old Pentium-2 300, so I'm hopeful heat buildup won't be a concern. In YAST, when I selected the ACPI settings button, a message told me the laptop was "probably" APM, and it would not display any ACPI settings. So, after having wasted your time with my lazy post, I checked out the BIOS options on the laptop, and there is a setting within the BIOS to keep the system active with the lid closed. I set that, closed the lid, and just tested the system. All's fine now. Thanks again, Steve
