If /var/run/samba/winbindd.pid exists, and you are absolutely sure that winbindd is *not* running (issue `ps aux`), than you can remove /var/run/samba/winbindd.pid, and try to restart it. I have to say that I do not know winbindd in particular, but this approach is what I would try, after trying to figure out *why* winbindd died of course. ;) Cheers, Leen
