Hi All, I've got an old, low spec laptop (hostname: mobile) set up for remote X sessions via the xdmsc scripts. Currently, mobile connects to host 'audio', but this is not satisfactory since audio is often maxed out doing sound recording and processing. I plumped for using audio as the remote machine (in this setup, it's unclear which is the client and which the server) basically because it was available and had X configured for local logins. When audio is processing a sound file, particularly when recording an external source, it leaves the login from mobile unresponsive to say the least. The only other machines on the network which are permanently on are the gateway (which I don't want involved in this for obvious reasons) and the main server, which does NIS and nfs mainly and has no X installed (beyond what midnight commander demands.) It seems sensible to use the server (gandalf) instead of audio as the remote machine. Short of installing and setting up X completely on gandalf, I am a bit at a loss as to how to accomplish this. I'd much prefer it if gandalf didn't have everything X related running locally - I don't want to use a GUI locally on that machine. Also, the 'graphics' card and monitor are suitably low spec for a text only display (it might as well be a CGA card.) So, do I need to have X on gandalf configured for the local display if it's only ever used to provide a remote login? Indeed, how much of X needs to be installed and what needs to be running to make this work? Cheers Dylan -- "I see your Schwartz is as big as mine" -Dark Helmet
