Try to use dd to copy the partition to a file on your new (I guess you have one) drive.
Then use mount -o loop
to mount this file as loop device, and try to repair the file system and get the file you need.
If his disk really has bad blocks, dd will not work. He will have to use something like ddrescue that doesn't stop when it encounters bad blocks but works around them.
