The problem comes in trying to get correct dpi (X,X) where both sides are the same. I have (98,96) right now which is as close as I could get. (when the numbers don't match, the screen stretches things). Once I setup the proper resolution, adjusting the modeline is what changes the dpi.
You can have whatever DPI you want by setting 'DisplaySize' in 'Section "Monitor"' in /etc/X11/xorg.conf (XF86Config), Xft.dpi in /etc/X11/Xresources, and if you use Gnome, running gnome-control-center to configure ~/.gtkrc.
