Most likely you did not perform: # apt update ok, I did that !
After that try apt install <anything> seems I am having problems with dependencies. I've always wondered about this situation, where it says an older version is required, what do you do about that??
ran apt-get install sane and got:
sane is already the newest version. You might want to run `apt-get -f install' to correct these: The following packages have unmet dependencies: epiphany: Depends: mozilla (= 1.6) but 1.7.2-17.2 is to be installed galeon: Depends: mozilla (= 1.6) but 1.7.2-17.2 is to be installed gconf2-doc: Depends: gconf2 (= 2.4.0.1) but 2.6.1-7 is to be installed gstreamer-plugins-default: Depends: gstreamer-plugins (= 0.6.4) but 0.8.1-17 is to be installed Depends: libgstcontrol-0.6.so.0 but it is not installable Depends: libgstreamer-0.6.so.0 but it is not installable

You have different repositories offering different versions of the same package. Try installing the dependent packages separately - for example, if you install mozilla-1.7 you will probably then find that galeon and epiphany will install with no problems.
