I have a spare machine here(with an external modem), currently loaded with SuSE 9.2 Pro, which I would like to use as a mail and proxy server for my existing machine wired to the network. Mail Server: The majority of the clients linked to the 'server' are dual boot Win XP and SuSE 9.0/9.2 Pro. I would like to have a single mail store (Distributed IMAP-dIMAP) which would scan and react to the incoming messages for both SPAM and virii. I have heard of many programs that could help me in accomplishing this but I am confused as to what each does, HOW it all works and what order they need to be configured ie sendmail and Postfix are both MTA's. which is configured when going via YAST:Mail Transfer Agent?( I assume Postfix). Perhaps the following graphic will simply what I mean: 1) Mail is delivered to my ISP POP3 mailbox | | 2) kppp dials my ISP at certain times and Postfix sends mail waiting in the IMAP store 'Outbox' and retrieves awaiting mail. | | 3) Incoming mail is received by Postfix | | 4)Postfix routes the mail to clamav for antivirus | | 4.1) clamav checks all the email | | 4.2) Clean Virus | | 5.0) SpamAssassin Trash(left unread in case clean) | ____________________________ | | | 5.1) |Clean |Spam | | 5.2) Trf to dIMAP store Trf to dIMAP store INBOX folder Junk folder 6.0) Client A connects to IMAP server to update mail and receives an updated dIMAP mail store/mirror. 7.0)Client A disconnects to process email offline. 8.0 Client B connects to the IMAP server to update mail and receives an updated dIMAP mail store/mirror. 9.0 Client B disconnects to process mail offline. 10.0) Client A and B are the same person, just using different machines ie a desktop and a laptop. Does this sound reasonable and possible solution, even if it is a bit long winded and perhaps misguided? Where does fetchmail come into it or does it need to retrieve the mail (2) and pass it to Postfix? I have no experience in working with source or compiling and rely on SuSE RPM's that can be installed via YAST. Currently only boxed set RPM's have been installed.
