Are these all SCSI or ATAPI or mixed? Most PC motherboards can only handle 4 ATAPI devices which might explain why the hard disk isn't being shown if it's ATAPI also.

Might just be the icon, but I seem to remember awhile back that some SCSI devices "faked ATAPI," there was a bit more work required to get them going 0 a symlink to an ATAPI device, but I thought it changed some time ago.
This is just non-functional; I have no idea why. It's pointing to the device (mis-typed below as sdc4) /dev/hdc4, the internal zip 250 which now reads a zip disk, but won't release it without a re-boot.

Is the device set for 4 manually?
no
All 4 CD/DVD devices, the real floppy, and the 9.2 drives work as expected. The USB Zip drive also functions but interestingly the icon changes to that for a USB drive when a disk is inserted, and disappears when the disk is
Ah, the wonders of plug-and-pray. :-)
Neither the "floppy" /dev/sdb nor the "hard disk" /dev/sdc4 will function at all and I can't determine to what the /dev/sdc4 points.
The "floppy" sdb is still somewhat of a mystery; the /dev/sdc4 is again a mis-type on my part, it's hdc4, the internal zip 250 which does now read but won't release.
Did you try a du command to see if it'll show the drive?
no, forgot to try that but I can later

I had the same problem, it turns out that the locale I set had not taken. Once I adjusted the local in the KDE taskbar it displayed time fine.
I've done that daily for about a week, always resetting it to the correct local time and selecting the eastern US time zone, but each reboot its back to some wacky time.
Cheers
Thanks for the suggestions; I'm still plugging away at it. dave -- David C. Johanson Linux Counter # 116410 Powered by SuSE Linux 7.3 People who behold a phenomenon will often extend their thinking beyond it; people who merely hear about the phenomenon will not be moved to think at all. -- Goethe
