I get the same error when I have no dvd in the drive and I do have a /dev/dvd (nothing in /etc/fstab for /dev/dvd) My /dev/dvdrecorder and /dev/dvd are both sym links to /dev/hdd As root: cp -a /dev/dvdrecorder /dev/dvd (the -a preserves the permissions... on my box they are doug.disk)
Thanks Doug, The sym link thing worked. The DVD now playing OK
I don't think it's the codecs, but if the above doesn't solve the problem, you could install them and see. You can always remove them.
