... However, I don't seem to be able to post or mail from gnus. The default is set to use sendmail as the agent (which I thought was working on my system) but no mail goes out.
Mailing from Gnus does not work well with Emacs in SUSE Linux 9.1, the mail header is somehow damaged. I don't remember the details but I think I reported the problem to SUSE some time ago. A workaround is to use Gnus with XEmacs. The problem wasn't in previous versions of SuSE Linux and I haven't tested 9.2 yet.
So I'd like to change it to use my ISP's smtp server and was not sure about the syntax and where to put it (I don't currently have a ~/.gnus file (using SUSE) but I do have a ~/.gnu-emacs file.
I don't know how to do it but the local SMTP (postfix configured with YaST) works here. $ rpm -qf /usr/lib/sendmail postfix-2.0.19_20040312-11 -- A.M.
