What are you talking about abandoning the version number scheme? .1, .3, .5, .7 etc are development kernels. As soon as it's stable _enough_ that bleeding-edge users might want to use it, it's released as the next higher even number (.6 in this case). That way they get more people on the bug-testing bandwagon. Linus stays around until he's so happy with it that he decides it's time to split off the next development branch. Evenone knows that as long as Linux is still working on stable kernel it's because he's not done going over it with a fine-tooth comb yet. If you want a really stable kernel you should wait until Linux has moved on to the next dev branch.
