I built my dual Opteron system for less than $2,200 (no monitor). There's a big jump from the 242 to the 244 (double the cost) and the 246 is way up there. IIRC the Opteron and the FX are essentially the same chip and are priced about the same. Once you go 64 you'll never go back ;-) The fact that SuSE beats Windows to 64bit by over a year (based on MS projections) makes it all the sweeter.
Jeff,
Did you happen to purchase the system complete, or did you build it all from parts? I'm looking at doing the latter. Any good places on the net to go shopping? :) (my normal place doesn't even carry dual socket boards, nor the cpu)
I build all my own stuff so that I can be sure the parts are linux compatible and upgradeable which are potential problems with retail and even barebones systems. You won't see Opterons available at most retailers but you should be able to find the FX chip. My son and I have a little side business building gaming systems, repairing/upgrading PCs, and repairing and upgrading Windows installations (yes I'm a winwhore but I've got to pay for the kid's college somehow) so we have accounts with wholesalers, hence the good prices. If your having problems getting stuff in the US you can contact me off list. Jeff
