I have been having a problem with a tape drive hanging my suse 9.0 pro server. The backup job starts and within 15-30 seconds of the job starting to write to the tape, everything freezes. The server stays up but nothing really works. No menus or commands work. The only option is to do a hard reset on the box. No errors are ever generated in any logs or on the screen. I have tried using taper, arkeia, tar, for programs, all see the drive fine and can format tapes etc, but they all hang the same way. I have also tried with and without x/kde loaded. Same deal.
Server is a Dell poweredge 2300, dual PII 400, 512 ram. I have a compaq 2SL controller with 2 drives running raid 1. The tape drive is an HP Surestore Dat 40 (DDS4). I have tried it on the on-board adaptec 7890 and 7860 controllers. I have also tried using a PCI adaptec 2690. I have also tried both the term jumper on the drive and using a active terminator at the end of the cable with no change.
Anyone have any ideas what else I can try? Are the any known bugs in 2.4 smp kernels that might cause this or maybe a problem with the adaptec driver ada7xxxx ? Thanks for any help.
I quit using Adaptec controllers with tape drives a while back. I ran into all sorts of 'odd' behaviour. Nothing I could point to and say "this doesn't work", but a zillion weird intermittants. I switched to Siig SCSI controllers and everything worked again. Same make & model tape unit, 6 different ones. Mike- -- If you can keep your head while those around you are losing theirs...
