[Wed, 8 Sep 2004 16:49:44 -0400]: X.org did release a 6.8, but stopped it due to many bugs/problems, so it might be advisable to delay an update to these. Don't understand why SuSE released them really.
Because many people would complain loudly if we didn't.
Keep in mind that these X11 packages (like the KDE updates) are provided as-is, without support and any guarantee that they really work and are *not* official releases. They're for those people that want to run the latest software and *know* of the problems they might be facing.

I think it is really great that SuSE is so quick in releasing rpms (even though untested, buggy etc. etc.) for newer versions of major pieces of software like X, KDE etc. It was THE reason why I moved to SuSE 9.1 Pro. One may wonder that why would someone be interested in buggy, untested rpms. For two reasons. 1. To see if the newer "buggy" version solves the problem that the older, "supposedely stable" has. In many cases - it does. In many cases it does not. 2. To be able to test the newer version. Not just for testing the newer release but to make sure that *my* application/tool etc. are working well with the newer release. For the second reason, I used to spend, nah waste, a lot of time with other distributions - trying to compile from sources - compiling dependencies - searching on google for solutions to weird compilation errors etc. The value of the time saved by not having to compile from sources surpasses the cost of a professional distribution many times over.
