<rant> It would be really nice to have a searchable archive of SuSE mailing lists, run by SuSE. In my search with Google for clues about my problem, one keyword I used was "suse-linux-e", hoping to find SuSE-specific items. Nothing popped up. Having a list of messages (>5000 in July) without some search capability is next to useless. </rant>
You can make Google work harder for you. Learn about the "site:" and "inurl:" restrictions, for example. You can use the form-based interface (http://www.google.com/advanced_search) to get started. Look at the resulting search URLs (preset in the search field of the results page) and you can bypass the forms interface and include the special keywords in your queries submitted via the basic search page. If finding information on the Internet is a big part of your use of the Internet, then learning about advanced Google features is very worthwhile. There's an O'Reilly book "Google Hacks" and the "Google Pocket Guide" which are handy references for the avid Google user. If you prefer on-line references or don't want to lay out the cash for the books, Google's own on-line documentation might suffice: http://www.google.com/help/index.html or http://www.google.com/help/refinesearch.html, e.g. If you're really hardcore, you can access the Google Web API.
