Problem: Grub as text character shows up in the left upper corner of the screen with a blinking courser but nothing else happens and I have to reset the system. <This is my first installation. I have no experience with linux> System: Mobo: ASUS K8V dekuxe with an AMD64 -chipset: VIA K8T800 VIA VT8237 Storage: South Bridge supports (VIA): - 2 x Ultra 133 connectors - 2 x SATA connectors Promise R20378 Raid controller - 2 x SATA connectors I have 1 Hitachi Deskstar Model IC35L180AVV207-1 connected to the VIA ultra 133 connector. I have 3 Western Digital WD360. 2 connected to the VIA chip (South Bridge) and 1 connected to the Promise chip. Software: For boot manager I use the IBM boot manager in a small partition in the IDE. The 2 SATA connected to the VIA chip one has winXP and the other OS/2. [My plan is to install SuSE linux in the 3rd SATA connected to the Promise chip] SuSE 9.0 64 bit. I also have the PatchCD from SuSE that inlclude the SATA drives. Method of installation and Progress. (1) Using one the utilities (DFSEE) I create the following in the SATA connected to the Promise chip: - primary partition, 15MB, 0x83 - logical, 240MB, 0x82 - logical, 25GB, 0x83 (2) SuSE patchCD loads OK and recognize all the hardware including the SATA drives. I custom the partition in the selected drive and format - the primary (15MB) ext3, mounted </boot> - the logical (240MB) swap, mounted </swap> - the logical (25GB) reise, mounted > For boot loader: -GRUB -installed in the boot sector of the /boot partition -the IBM boot manager is the default Results: The IBM boot manager loads OK. Both OS/2 and winXP selection work as they should. When I select linux, it begins the loading of GRUB, but then the IPL stops. Questions: Many users have a similar setup without any problems. The fact that Grub start to load means that I am not far off. (a) is there any hardware incompatibilities? (b) could it be related to the SATA drive/drivers? (3) could it be solved if I upgrade to 9.1? TIA -=terry(Denver)=- chusty@attglobal.net AIM: terryXela Date: US: 08/06/04 / Euro: 06.08.04, Time: 14:09:21
