Thank you. I wasn't using the ps command correctly. Following your instructions I found both instances of the hung processes, and I used kill and got rid of them. If you did ps aux | grep wp - and it didn't give you anything don't bother, the process isn't there.
To get it of your "footboard" or "systems tray" or "panel": right click on it and press "quit" in the popup menu.
