Adversaries cannot be ignored if you hope to prevail or at least withstand their onslaught.
Microsoft is nothing if not hegemonic. They are openly monopolistic and will drive out or absorb all competing software and ideas if allowed to do so.
So I think that just as it behooves them to know what we're about (in their attempts to eliminate the competition that Open Source in general and Linux in particular represent to their money collecting machine), the reverse is true, too.
