Have you checked the knowledge base?? I had a similar problem long ago and there was a fix which involved (if I recall) setting a symlink.
I checked a document in the KB that was related to Suse9.0 (none to 8.1) http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2003/11/thallma_90_sane.html However I verified on my system that it already contained the correct path for the program scanimage, that is /usr/X11R6/bin/scanimage.

This scanimage problem was fixed using a new sane built that also include sane.1. 3) Additional info: My /etc/sane.d/epson.conf file contains only one line that is not commented out: scsi epson Each time I have to install the undected scanner in Yast2, a new filename is created with the same content, e.g. /etc/sane.d/epson.conf.yast2-2775. Why this? The following is the EPSON related content of a logfile created using /usr/sbin/hwinfo: Vendor: EPSON Model: Perfection1640 Rev: 1.03 vendor "EPSON", model "Perfection1640", rev "1.03", type "Processor" vendor "EPSON", model "Perfection1640", rev "1.03", type "Processor" Model=EPSON Perfection1640 VendorName=EPSON Model=EPSON Perfection1640 VendorName=EPSON Model: "EPSON Perfection1640" Vendor: "EPSON" Model: "EPSON Perfection1640" Vendor: "EPSON" More suggestions to get the scanner detected in Yast2 after reboot? Thanks, Terje J. Hanssen
