I never ran 2.6.8.1, but 2.6.8.1-mm was puzzling, I could get some to work with pci=routeirq and -mm3/-mm4 would boot fully at times with acpi=off, other times, they wouldn't boot on 32-bit, but were fine on x86_64 without needing any additional boot parameters.
