*** Summary After upgrading a machine from SuSE 9.0, to SuSE 9.1, it has the following problems: 1) Cryptic error messages from md during boot. 2) Some partitions may not be mounted. For example, although /dev/hda5 isn't mounted anywhere but it is "busy" when I attempt to mount it. 3) Attempts to patch the kernel (from SuSE) to version 2.6.5 result in an unusable system. After the patch, uname indicates 2.6.4 running but the modules are for 2.6.5. *** Status I previously had a SuSE 9.0 machine with two IDE drives. Each drive was partitioned into one small (boot) and one huge partition. The small partitions were mounted directly as /dev/hda5 (/boot) and /dev/hdd5 (/boot_bkp). The large partitions, /dev/hda6 and /dev/hdd6, were used to build a level 1 RAID. /dev/md0 was then used for space by LVM. During the upgrade, I manually converted my VG from LVM1 to LVM2. I'm using grub. I'll start with the md error messages. Perhaps the other problems are related to this. During boot, this happens: ---- md: raidstart(pid 1005) used deprecated START_ARRAY ioctl. This will not be supported beyond 2.6 md: could not lock hda6. md: could not import hda6! md: autostart unknown-block(0,774) failed! md: Autodetecting RAID arrays. md: autorun ... md: ... autorun DONE. device-mapper: : dm-linear: Device lookup failed device-mapper: error adding target to table ---- After 10 of these, the boot process continues. After booting, neither /boot, nor /boot_bkp is mounted, although they ought to be mounted (fstab): /dev/hda5 /boot ext2 defaults 1 2 /dev/hdd5 /boot_bkp ext2 defaults 1 2 Attempts to mount either fail, mount: /dev/hda5 already mounted or /boot busy, as do attempts to unmount them, umount: /boot: not mounted If I use online update to patch the kernel up to SuSE's 2.6.5 version, the machine still boots up with the 2.6.4 kernel. However, the 2.6.4 modules are gone so it has serious problems (I then need to use a boot CD to reinstall the 2.6.4 kernel). This machine and drive layout were working fine in SuSE 8.2 and 9.0.
