I upgraded from 8.2 to 9.1 yesterday. It was less than stellar, but not catastrophic. I have some items that perhaps some of you can guide me with: 1. When the system boots, I would like to just see a textual display of all the boot messages, not the chameleon and progress bar. I have compared /boot/grub/menu.lst from my 8.2 install to 9.1's, but I cannot see any obvious difference. There is the "desktop" kernel option, but I can't find any docs on those kernel boot options. 2. Subfs seemed to be causing problems with my Zip drive, so I disabled it. Now, though, I don't think it was subfs as much as hotplug. I turned off the submount stuff for /dev/hdb (Zip drive) and configured autofs for it and that seemed to work. However, overnight X crashed (but not the system) and on the console screen I saw lots of messages like: Jul 8 08:11:02 brutus /etc/hotplug/block.agent[6478]: new block device /block/hdb/hdb4 Jul 8 08:11:03 brutus /etc/hotplug/block.agent[6605]: try 2 while waiting for /block/hdb/hdb4's bus_id Jul 8 08:11:04 brutus /etc/hotplug/block.agent[6605]: try 3 while waiting for /block/hdb/hdb4's bus_id Jul 8 08:11:05 brutus /etc/hotplug/block.agent[6605]: try 4 while waiting for /block/hdb/hdb4's bus_id Jul 8 08:11:06 brutus /etc/hotplug/block.agent[6605]: try 5 while waiting for /block/hdb/hdb4's bus_id Jul 8 08:11:07 brutus kernel: ide-floppy: hdb: I/O error, pc = 0, key = 2, asc = 4, ascq = 0 Jul 8 08:11:09 brutus kernel: ide-floppy: hdb: I/O error, pc = 1b, key = 2, asc = 3a, ascq = 0 This doesn't happen until autofs has mounted and then unmounted the disk. I can get the messages to stop by ejecting the disk, but I'd rather not stoop to that. 3. At boot I'm getting errors on my hard drive (hda): Jul 8 07:33:15 brutus kernel: hda: task_no_data_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error } Jul 8 07:33:15 brutus kernel: hda: task_no_data_intr: error=0x04 { DriveStatusError } These don't seem to persist after boot, but they are disconcerting nonetheless. Should I be worried about them? 4. In the /media directory, I have entried for cdrecorder, cdrom, floppy, sda1 and sr1 (zip was there, but I deleted it manually). The first three make sense, but not the last two... The funny thing is that when I did a quick run-test of 9.1 on a spare partition, it only created cdrecorder, cdrom, and floppy. There is an fstab entry for sr1: /dev/sr1 /media/sr1 auto ro,noauto, user, exec 0 0 #HOTPLUG B3Fu.GOvMWb4jWRC but not for sda1. What would they be? [I commented sr1 out, but when I next booted my USB devices were dead and the process hung while trying to probe for them. I've not yet tried rebooting to test to see if that was the cause.] These issues are not show-stoppers, and I've not yet decided to go back to 8.2 or 9.0, but I might... I could also do a clean install of 9.1 and see if that helps anything. That would also be much effort... If anyone has explanations for these issues or could give me direction for finding documentation on these issues which I have not discovered on my own, I would appreciate it. Thanks! -- -M There are 10 kinds of people in this world: Those who can count in binary and those who cannot.
