I believe if you'll check, the xorg.conf doesn't play a part in the standard 9.1 install. If you update to the Xorg files that SuSE provides on their ftp mirrors, it might though. ;o)
He should still only be looking and working with the XF86Config file.
I am just speaking from my experience. xorg.conf did not exist in my /etc/X11 at first, neither did I use the xorg packages (until after I saw how using the config file was so similar to XFree86). When I first upgraded to 9.1, I had very few problems, but the ones I did have were all related to X. Monitor resolution wouldn't take effect after changes in Yast and SAX2. The keyboard choice of us, pc-104 would not be correct when I restarted X, although it was fine on the tty1-6 screens. The optical wheelmouse wouldn't "wheel", and wouldn't "mouse" very well either. I don't remember how I stumbled across this info. Changes to xorg.conf stuck and everything X returned to normal. I haven't tried any SAX2 or YaST2 changes to see if they are written to xorg.conf or XF86Config--don't want to break anything again. xorgcfg is a very crude gui configurator, but if you know your equipment it can be used. xorgconfig is a command line configurator which I used to set up the basics, but, again, it helped to know my equipment to use it.
