Sure a few glitches have crept up, but nothing out of the ordinary. FDD: Sure it can be frustrating, but easily solvable (if i have followed the threads right...) USB: Haven't used, so no comment there CD-RW: I think my "trashed CD-R media-quota" under Windows must be some 500% worse then under Linux... Never had any lasting mounting problems. In windows i just did "quickfix #1".. Reboot, almost every day... Mounting Optical media: Never experienced the problem. DVD +.R: No comments. Don't use DVD that much. MP3 encoding: I seem to recall several encoders for Linux. Both faster and better then those for Windows.. And they were all just a website away. Just as in windows. Video playing: Kaffeine (for KDE), Xanim, and a few mpg players out of the box. But as in Windows, anything more "esoteric", the net.. Samba: Why would you want it?? Leave MS and get rid of the headache. Videodrivers: Have you EVER found a MS driver that utilized the card 100%. You have to use propriety drivers from the manufacturer. And until the manufacterors start providing Linuxdrivers.. 3D: Guaranteed to crash? Please; pointy me to that note of guarantee. I have never seen such a document. NTFS: Propriety filesystem. Not even Windows itself can write to it without complications. I cant recall how many lost chains i have had during the years. Since i went from NTFS/Windows to Reiserfs/Linux, i have NEVER EVER had a corrupt drive, Not even after accidently cutting the power during a compilation. Try THAT on NTFS... GUI interface: No comment. Laptop Power management. Same as in windows. Not 100% secure under MS either. Wireless periphials: Cant tell. I like my wires all over the place :) WLAN: getting better by the day. I can agree to some degree about the "problem" of not getting full media coverage. But as an experienced Windows sysadmin i must say its even WORSE under MS... I cant recall how many DIFFERENT sites i have to plow through to get semi-fully-functional mediaplayer. In the last two years i have seen a TREMENDOUS improvement in the Linux multimedia field. It keeps improving day by day. I keep finding myself lacking so many nifty things from Linux/KDE in Windows. I keep feeling crippled working under a MS OS. Not to mention the problems installing one on a slightly older box. I have had several used computers that ran a mix of Windows versions, and NONE of them was 100% "out of the box". There is ALWAYS drivers here, codecs there, and "security"patches galore to download before you even can THINK of using the computer. Not to mention never to connect online without a functional, updated anti-virus client. Today i run 100% Linux in my network. The last thing i need to look into is software for accountiong and taxes. Other then that there is nothing i lack from the Windows world... This was my .02$ worth. Those religious wars on what is best or not, will never be put aside. Not as long as there is more then one OS to choose from, one desktop or one software provider. And as long as human kind keeps being different and individuals, we will always have different opinions. (Thank goodness for that!) Bottom line: If you don't like the way linux/windows/Solaris/whatnot behaves, Don't use it. Noone is forcing you... - -- /Rikard - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Rikard Johnels email : rikjoh@norweb.se Web : http://www.rikjoh.com Mob : +46 (0)735 05 51 01 - ------------------------ Public PGP fingerprint ---------------------------- < 15 28 DF 78 67 98 B2 16 1F D3 FD C5 59 D4 B6 78 46 1C EE 56 > -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.2 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQFAxYXcWdS2eEYc7lYRAgMhAJsEW8r3/0q6IYz8BCnWon9xy4dSCgCg1heW 5oU6ah6i9l4yVGjq8BYaS/s= =XYde -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----
