Not sure, I'll try a couple of things at work tomorrow and get back with you. Meanwhile, please send me (work and home) your output, if any, from the scanimage command. tnx,, dave Doug McGarrett wrote:

Hi Doug -
Back from dinner and walking the dog.
O.K.,SCSI s good. Let's start, as root, by issuing a cd to /bin and then run: ./rescan-scsi-bus.sh
This should bring the scanner to the attention of the system. You should get output something like the following: Host adapter 0 (advansys) found. Host adapter 1 (ide-scsi) found. Scanning for devices 0 0 5 0 . . . NEW: Host: scsi0 Channel:00 Id:5 Lun:00
If this works as advertised, then, still as root, run: sgcheck
Using the example above, you should see something akin to:
device host/channel/ID/LUN type Vendor Make /dev/sg0 0/0/5/0 Scanner Umax Astra 2200
So far so good?
Then, still as root to ensure everyone has access to the scanner, run:
chmod 777 /dev/sg0
Finally, this time as user, check that all can see it by running:
scanimage -L
and you should get a response something like:
device "Umax:/dev/sg)" is a Umax Astra 2200 flatbed scanner.
Let me know if this did the trick.

I'm running the scanner on SCSI. and I also have 2 SCSI drives (CDR and DVD) in the machine that work fine. I have SuSE 9.1 PRO. I doubt that there is a problem with the SCSI card, since the drives work, and the same card drives the scanner in WinXP. It's a Tekram DC-390, which I know some people on this list don't like, but I haven't had any other problems with it, and it's a heck of a lot cheaper than Adaptec.

To get started, tell me how you are configuring this scanner, USB or SCSI. If SCSI I feel confident we can get it working, but if you are going the USB route were finished for tonight. As far as I can determine, USB is broken in 9.1. some folks claim it works O.K., but we have done three installs on very different machines and it simply doesn't work. We are working hard to find out the problem and get it fixed, at least as far as we need for boxes and when we have the solution will post it to the group. For now let me know how you are proceeding. YaST doesn't come into play with what I have done to get the scanners functioning.
I'll be "on" and "off" for the next little while to do dinner and dog walk.

Hi Doug -
dave here. first, your scanner IS supported as it is the same one i run here at home. i'm positive we can get it up and running tomorrow evening but tonight i'm just too tired to tackle it. ;-)
spent the entire day fighting with a windows box trying to get a nikon LS 5000 ED scanner working. short of it is that i had to eventually do a complete re-install of 2000 and then fix all the associated problems, but it's up and running as well as my LS-20 and H-P 4P which the 5000 managed to totally corrupt. So, please bear with me and we should have you running tomorrow evening. mid you, my experience with this scanner has been on this SuSE 7.1 box, but i see no reason why we can't fix your problem.
in the interim, please read my original message to Frits as i think it may contain the info you need if you are in a hurry. ;-) i can't tell for sure but just from this single email it ;ools like you've left off a step or two.
regards,
dave
