Try this:
Kstart --> multimedia --> Volume control --> Kmix
When you get Kmix up, click on: Advanced
Unselect IEC958 and quit.
When I did this, I did not have Kmix listed. I went into Control Center>>Sound & Multimedia>>Sound System. "Autodetect" was selected, so I changed it to "ALSA", and the noise went away. Thanks to pointing me in the right line of thought. Ed Harrison SuSE 9.0, Kernel 2.6.5 PolarBar Mailer 1.25a
