Again, my apologies - I am still trying to learn this thing called linux and not return to MS... there are still a lot of things I need to learn... * accessing my digital camera * being able to use my scanner * being able to record audio input (from old LPs) * being able to burn CDs * how to d/l and install programs that are tar.qz * how to customize the system and not just use off the shelf stuff etc., etc., etc.
Anyway, thanks for your information -- and I have no desire to waste anyone's time... (My wife sure things I am wsting a lot of my time.)
You have to start somewhere and make progress from there. The SuSE User Guide is full of useful stuff covering quite a bit mentioned in your list, but you are sure to have questions beyond that, so don't be bashful about asking, that's what this list is about and at times you have to grow a shell and just ask away. www.google.com/linux can be worth a visit as also the SuSE archives. A quick trip to google turned up some posts in the SuSE archive about recording from LP's. With installing from tar.gz files again there is lots of stuff on google, usually you can "tar jxfv xxx.tar.bz2" or "tar zxfv xxx.tar.gz", cd into the directory and read the README or INSTALL file, you soon get the dirt on what to do.
