I had similar issue I beleive there is a protocol in the root login which looks for new hardware. When I mount my second drive into the *nix only box and log in as root Yast pops up and asks me if I want to add the hardware to the system. Next time dont reboot, log in as root. (SuSE 9.0)
A few hours ago, I tried to download some pictures from my digital camera via a USB port. SuSE refused to recognize it. After trying several things, none of which worked, I decided to apply the Microsoft technique of rebooting the system with the camera connected to the USB port. Now SuSE recognizes the camera and allows me to mount it. Now I know that the solution is not to reboot the system. There must be a way to force SuSE to recognize a new USB item using the CLI but I can't figure out how to do it. Thanks for any pointers beyond RTFM cuz I already tried that.
