I took a deep breath and plunged in...... I did the formatting using the Partitioner in YaST.
Because the flash still didn't behave as I expected, I used cfisk to format it as FAT - still without success re mounting it.
However, all got resolved when dreadnoght provided the solution to my problem: put an entry into fstab. I did and it now all works :-).
You shouldn't need that, the hot plug manager should pick it up when you plug it in, you may find after formatting you need to unplug/replug for the hot plug manager to notice it.
With aq properly working systen you will find hot plug adding and removing entries from fstab as things come and go!
Under normal circumstances what you say is what should happen -- but these are not normal circumstances and which is why I asked this forum for help. I installed on the second computer the latest and greatest mantel 2.6.5-x kernel- and the wheels fell off. My question at the time was, is this what we may expect in Suse 9.1 considering that the DVDs/CDs must be now being mass produced for distribution in a couple of weeks and I am pretty sure that it won't have the 2.6.5-x kernel in it, so if I am having a problem with having the flash disk recognised correctly by 2.6.5 what will happen when I install Suse 9.1 in 3 weeks time? The other computer is running the 2.4.21 kernel and the flash disk is recognised correctly (s you describe above). BTW, I installed 2.6.5 because it is supposed to have support for the Connexant CX2388x chipset used in the tvtuner card I recently bought- but I am buggered if I can have the card recognised. (There is a rather interesting, and so true, comment about Linux in an article on www.theinquirer.net.) Cheers. -- All Scottish food is based on a dare.
