Grub can write to the other disk without problems. As root enter grub and the following grub> device (hd0) /dev/hdb grub> root (hd0,0) grub> setup (hd0) This will add grub to the MBR of the second disk. I would then copy the default entry in menu.1st and change hda to hdb and name it something else. You should then be able to boot from the second disk and choose the new entry just created.
