TIFF is a bog standard format so you shouldn't have any problems. What program did you use? Certainly, the GIMP will handle TIFFs (there's no difference between TIF and TIFF - the former is just because Windows only handles 3-letter extensions; it just stands for "tagged image file format").
----<text trimmed>---- When I read the part about "colored balls" I wondered if it was an "April Fool's joke" So, I just checked what "file assoications" KDE had for ".tif" and ".tiff" on my 8.2 machine. In addition to The Gimp (which was at the top of the list) there was "Kuickshow" and "Kview."
