Okay, this is my problem, and has to do w/ sound cards from a while ago... the hardware on my Suse9.0 box I'm trying to get it to recognise is one of two sound cards a Turtle Beach Montego ( yeah it's not new either , but the sound chips should still be recognized.) And the other is an Aureal IIRC a *Crystal* sound chip. "Vortex" my husband thinks it says on the main chip for teh aureal card... I don't recall what's on the Montego-turtle beach which I recall buying directly from them , a couple of different OSes ago... I can't seem to find any driver that makes the Turtle beach card happy.. various bits of info are tossed out mainly having to do w/ installing all the Alsa stuff etc.. especially any modules in "snd" .. but I have everything from the multimeda selections installed already..
It seems to require a major negotiation to change a sound card, but a video card is N/p at all??? that's weird, right? It's not just me being paranoid? I *should* be able to change hardware w/o having to negotiate w/ the EU, UN or any other collection of initials one can put together. ??? THere is a turtle Beach Linux Driver, somewhere on the disks but I can't find it any search w/ the information copied and pasted just says no results... so I have no idea how to beat it into submission tonight... but would appreciate any info that would at worst let me email someone at Turtle Beach and see if I can get some straight info about that card... AS for Aureal, didn't they fold up and die some years ago? But IIRC thier cards, teh ones they sold from their pages were pretty much a generic version of something they were trying to sell for large money....
I really don't want to go back to teh soundblaster, and I certainly do not want to be stuck w/ SB as an only choice for sounds... I know the new ones are sposed to be wonderfully good, the new anything is always suposed to be wonderful, til you get it home and it doesn't work and you are stuck w/ a collection of chips that you have no idea what they do, collecting dust in your offices...
I do remember both the Aureal card and the Turtle Beach /Montego was pretty spiffy for their time, but I have a feeling it was probably mid 90s or so. I know I was already here in the very nearly tropics... when I got it, they weren't too far down the road from here ... Pretty much similar situation, tho the location of the shop isn't quite as clear..
It has to be easier than reinstalling the OS to change a sound card... but now we have two boxen, teh Soundblaster is to go to the emachine. He can't install it there either... same error messages about not having installed enough alsa etc. Also there is some sort of cryptic archanery recomended to "do"
An error has occurred. Check you have correctly installed the ALSA package (from the series 'snd'). If the the problem persists, try passing options to the ALSA module. If your sound card still will not work, try OSS/Free or another module. In this case, launch the YaST sound configuration module from shell using the yast2 sound .oss command.
following those isntructions I get basically the info
blonde1@skronk:~> yast2 sound .oss bash: yast2: command not found blonde1@skronk:~> su Password: skronk:/home/blonde1 # yast2 sound .oss Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server Xlib: No protocol specified
I've tried it both as su root, and as moi.. same result.
something woerd is happening guys, I can't even install a driver for teh onboard chip that has been installed all the time as snd crd 1 when I have a sound card0 setup I'm lost, find nothing imedately useful in either of the two usually helpful books that came w/ the 9.0 ... maybe I wait for 9.1? should be next month or so to place preorders, no?
This stuff is making me nuttier than is usually the case .. and as we all know that can be a very dangerous situation... Red Buttons reappears and takes over Brando's part from Streetcar.... somehow the line which is almost sung, but closer to "plainsong" the line repeats as if it is the tag line to a joke "strange things are happening" That joke probably happened before all of us were born.. as IIRC Buttons was a strait actor, but my mum said he was a comic . But don't all comics get to be actors when they aren't as hip ( hep?) funny any more?
Still, none of that has anything to do w/ the actual problem, I hope... but you can see , I'm still kinda "frayed" at the edges from yesterdays histrionics no sleep last night probably wont sleep tonight while I worry this thing to death, and end up having one of your wonderful folks send me an answer, or a hint that leads me to Mordor and back, safely.. "I wish you were here w/ me now Samwise Gamgee!"

it's just an afterthought; okay ? : Anyone who cannot cope with mathematics is not fully human. I am well acquainted w/your frustration ...having been equally frustrated when I finally discovered that the security patches were sabotaging my external ISDN modem. At any rate, I read your whole note and did not notice any mention of YaST being allowed to automatically configure your sound card. You have tried that, have you not? If not, I'd suggest starting there.
