To whom it may concern.. Free to anybody ...to add...improve...make comments. or whatever. Would like to make a grub bootdisk...easy...follow these steps and it will be success everey-time...unless your media is suspect.. Why go to all this trouble...I found it the easiest way to reach your system if something goes wrong with MBR. WARNING...do not press reset switch while grub is in its beginning stages of booting...I was glad twice for having a grub boot disk...for some reason unknown to me it bedevell the MBR...when it reboot after pressing the reset switch...NON SYSTEM DISK...thanks to the floppy or you can go via cd 1 if you like...still find the boot-floppy the easier means to reach and correct the system. Put blank disk in 1.44 MB floppy drive Umount /media/floppy #to make sure it is not mounted mke2fs /dev/floppy mount /media/floppy mkdir /media/floppy/boot mkdir /media/floppy/boot/grub cp /boot/grub/stage1 /media/floppy/boot/grub/ cp /boot/grub/stage2 /media/floppy/boot/grub/ grub grub> root (fd0) grub> setup (fd0) grub> quit cp /boot/grub/menu.lst /media/flo ppy/boot/grub/ umount /media/floppy # force system to flush buffers Leave floppy in drive .......reboot Booting will be via floppy and look the same as harddisk boot....(if bios is set to look for floppy when booting) **************************************************** Harddisk.....install grub on MBR of first drive.. Ok if this is a repair...then the stage1...stage2...should be in place /boot/ grub/. Otherwise find them and cp to /boot/grub/ (up to now I always found them place...because I am a grub enthusiast...my first choice on install) This require even less elbow grease.. grub grub> root (hd0,0) grub setup (hd0) quit If there is no hardware problem your booting should be back to normal. ******************************** Suse friends...Enjoy -- Johan Registered Linux User #330034 May this be a good day for learning
