VMware yesterday released version 4.5.1 build 7568. According to the changelog, this version supports SuSE 9.0. I have just installed and tested the rpm version on my SuSE 9.0 system, which is running the Athlon -192 kernel. I am pleased to report that I did not need to run the any-any patch, nor do any of the other end runs necessary to get working vm*.o modules compiled. VMware was able to compile the modules on its own, and my existing W2K virtual machine booted up just fine. I've launched and tested all my key Windows apps, and all seem to be working just fine. There were two pleasant surprises: First, the new version of VMware tools provides much snappier performance than in 4.0.5. Video and disk I/O is noticeably smoother and faster (my system is a 1200MHz Athlon with a 100MHz FSB and 1GB RAM). Second, I am no longer getting "file may be in use" errors when accessing documents via Samba from the Windows 2000 VM. (All my work docs are on a Samba 3.0.2a share on the SuSE 9.0 host system). This was a free upgrade for me; I had only in the past two months bought VMware Workstation 4, so I can't say whether this will be a free upgrade for you. Now, all I need is for SuSE to update the kernel again to complete the testing! (Only kidding!) I hope this is helpful. Mark -- ______________________________________________________________ L.
