Hi list, I've recently purchased a new machine, and of course I'm trying to install SuSE on it. Unfortunately, I'm having a little trouble. The machine has a Gigabyte 8KNXP motherboard with a Silicon Image Serial ATA chip. I've set the mode to BASE (non-raid) in the Bios and attached two Maxtor Serial ATA drives to it. Installing SuSE is no problem, but the serial ata drives are detected as PIO mode devices. Any attempt (either through hdparm or yast) to change the drive mode to dma immediately locks up the entire system. On reboot I get a load of errors (drive not ready, dma mode set failed etc etc). I'm using SuSE's kernel 2.4.21, which should support SATA if I've read correctly. Has anyone encountered the same problem and maybe found a workaround? I'll try to compile a 2.6 kernel tonight to see if that helps, but I'd like to know why I can't get it to work with the 2.4 kernel. any help is appreciated, TIA Stefan
