I got spunky and decided to install SuSE 9.0 on my laptop, a Toshiba Satellite. The install went well, even the dual boot part. The installer found all my peripheral devices. I did all the updates via YOU. Everything seemed to work well and I was beginning to think this was my easiest install ever. The only problem was that the display monitor supports 1024 x 768 resolution (at least running under Windows XP) but Linux only allows me to use it in 800 x 600. So... I tried to set the resolution using Sax2. It refused to set the resolution to 1024 x 768. When I exited Sax2, I clicked on the Test button. This caused the screen to go completely blank. I waited a few minutes but it stayed blank. I tried Ctrl-alt-backspace. Nothing visible happened and the screen stayed blank. I had to use a simulated power failure even to reboot the system. Ok, a problem. After searching my printed docs and the WWW (downloaded and install the latest driver software RPM) and after trying to reset the resolution several times, I was still staring at a blank screen. So I decided to forget the resolution for a while, rebooted the system to get the small screen back, and starting "playing" with Linux on the smaller screen. Then I logged off from the gui (Gnome). I found myself again staring at a blank screen. Since I hadn't tried to change the screen resolution, I assume that something else must be the problem. It's almost as if the X server is shutting down but not restarting. But even if that happens, shouldn't I get a plain old text monitor so I can at least enter commands? Apparently not. Anyway... If anyone has any suggestions or pointers to a solution, I'd be very appreciative. Don Henson
