Hi All,
SUSE 8.2 Pro TYAN dual p-III MB with an all-ide dasd setup. IDE ch 1 has a HD as 'master' and ATA dvd drive as 'slave'. IDE ch 2 has a single HD as 'master'. When I play a DVD movie in XINE I find that DMA is turned off for the DVD drive, so I go to YAST asd use the option to examine and change the IDE DMA settings. The HDs are always set to the highest DMA setting appropriate for the HDs, but the DVD drive has DMA=OFF. I can change the DVD to DMA=ON and then the movie in XINE is perfect, even for days sometimes. But at other times the DVD gets reset to DMA=OFF randomly and unpredictably. I used to think that it was getting reset whenever the sys was re-booted, but now I have seen it reset a few times between re-boots. This sys is running the latest 2.4.20 kernel supplied by the security update in YOU this month.
Has anyone seen this bug? Is there a way to get the DMA setting to stick. I have seen other DMA probs in the archives but none match my prob.
Any help appreciated! ............... PeterB
There are later and better kernels for 8.2 here: ftp://ftp.mirror.ac.uk/sites/ftp.suse.com/pub/people/mantel/next/RPM I'm useing the 2.3.21-121 for a dual celery machine with good success and have not seen DMA fall off. I'm not necessarily recommending you upgrade the kernel, because you could probably solve this with an hdparm command in /etc/init.d/boot.local I wonder why you are mixing disks and cdroms on the same channels? I've seen recommendations not to do that in the past, don't know if they still apply. -- _____________________________________ John Andersen
