[12-14-03 00:55]: I am begging for someone to please help me with this sound issue! I am running SuSE 9.0 and I have no sound. When I try to play an MP3 in xmms, the file plays, but I get no output. I have opened alsamixer and made sure nothing is muted. I am running alsa 0.9.8-0.pm.0.
Pleading, not begging. You are a linux operator, chin-up.
try from the command line, sudo /usr/sbin/rcalsasound status
This reported as follows: ALSA sound driver loaded...running
if it reports 'running', do: sudo /usr/sbin/rcalsasound restart
This reported as follows: Shutting down sound driversnd-seq: Device or resource busy snd-intel8x0: Device or resource busy snd-pcm: Device or resource busy snd-timer: Device or resource busy snd-ac97-codec: Device or resource busy snd-mpu401-uart: Device or resource busy snd-rawmidi: Device or resource busy snd-seq-device: Device or resource busy snd-page-alloc: Device or resource busy snd: Device or resource busy

What does this mean and how do I fix it?
Thanks,

This is a problem with built-in AC97 type sound devices, just very unreliable. They work, but it's not the best solution for sound. You could try using a different sound output plugin in xmms. If that doesn't bring it up, drop down to init 3 and again do as Patrick suggested, restart alsa. Then back to init 5 to see if xmms will give you some output.
