Hello SuSE folkz, My sister's SuSE 9.0 system trashed after automated YaST update. Last Saturday night (11/22/03) my sister launched YaST automated update for her new shiny SuSE 9.0 installation. Before this update her system was going hunky dory for about two weeks, and it was very stable. After the update was completed, she noticed these things: 1. KDM login menu is distorted, root and user icons cut in half. 2. KDE menu is gone completely (e.g. Applications, Miltimedia, Internet and other items). 3. KDE's Run Command function is not working. 3. CUPS is not working and not starting anymore. 4. YaST can't be started at all. 5. Some KDE programs can't be launched even from the bash command prompt. Did somebody noticed these things? I tried to troubleshoot what went wrong. Here is some packages that were updated based on YaST log files: 1. kde3 base (I'm not sure) 2. kde3 libraries. 3. System configuration package. 4. Yast (libraries or program?) 6. CUPS packages 7. Glibc (I'm not sure, but it looks like it). 8. Ncurses (I'm not sure) When I try to start YaST in a bash it complains something about ncurses, then it gives error 79 and crashes. I gave up to continue to troubleshooting and just reinstalled the whole system from scratch. I asked her not to perform any updates for now. The same favor I asked from my clients who run SuSE 9.0, prior to this situation is cleared up. Since my sister is an average home user, she's not doing any weird experiments on her system, I suspect that something in SuSE updates has triggered this effect. So, how I can be sure that SuSE update packages are safe to install? I really don't want to run through my client sites and reinstall all their systems. Could somebody please share the information on this matter. Regards, Alex
