Try the failsafe install option. Most likely cause at install time is APM and ACPI conflicts.

On the boot options line try apm=off and acpi=off. After a succesful install you can re-enable either APM or ACPI and that depends on your laptop's APM or ACPI capabilities.

There is also an outside chance you'd have a PCMCIA conflict. But first things first.

I realize the problems are somewhat different, but with SuSE 8.2, start with "simple install first" (also true w/ 8.0, 8.1..) meaning "minimum install.. don't try to install open office at first, add it later after the machine is up and running. It's easy to do... I usually have to install in command mode, no gui's and simple "monitor" (no 3D) and as Stan suggested on the boot options line try apm=off and acpi=off.
