Dan Svarreby
I have just installed 9.0 Pro and I could see from the command "free -m" that SUSE recognizes all of my memory (1024 Mb RAM).
My question is:
- do I have to update the kernel so that I can benefit from "High Memory"-support by the kernel?
No, this option is on by default: $ zcat /proc/config.gz | grep HIGHMEM # CONFIG_NOHIGHMEM is not set CONFIG_HIGHMEM4G=y # CONFIG_HIGHMEM64G is not set CONFIG_HIGHMEM=y # <--- here # CONFIG_DEBUG_HIGHMEM is not set # CONFIG_HIGHMEM_EMULATION is not set
- where do I turn if I would like to install an updated kernel?
Kernel compilation and installation is described in the Administration guide. "Official" updated source code for 9.0 is not available yet. It will probably be on ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/9.0/suse/i586 ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/9.0/suse/src Kernels which fix a security hole may also be available via Yast Online Update, see ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/update/9.0 Some people use Mantel's kernels which are not supported by SUSE (or Novell ;-) ) ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/mantel
- what's the latest "SUSE"-released kernel?
The one on the DVD is k_deflt-2.4.21-99, Mantel's one is 2.4.21-121. I don't mention the experimental 2.6 kernel. -- A.M.
