Answering to my own post: The problem went away after I reinstalled the nvidia drivers from nvidia's web site. I don't really understand why they were not left intact during the upgrade. In any case, the system now behaves normally, although I have to say, after the upgrade I still experienced another Fatal DCOP error message. This time being more careful I had root waiting on console 2 and carefully killed all the processes associated with the failed kde startup. This prevented the system from freezing up. After removing the lock file in /tmp I was able to start kde fine on a second try. After rebooting it now starts flawlessly on the first try. Don't ask me how the problem went away. I am still a little miffed that this happened in the first place. Sorry for the crosspost for those of you who are on the alt.os.linux.suse ng. Cheers, Alex.
