YaST/hardware indicates that no scanner is installed However, when I try to use the YaST dialog to configure my scanner, it is correctly identified but setup fails

Strange! If you go to Sane site, http://www.sane-project.org , you don't see HP4300C mentioned. The reason is maybe that the scanner is well detected but the Sane version delivered by your SuSE version doe not support it. Alain
