Jim: thanks for the quick response. You are probably right on with your diagnosis. It seems like the problem only appears whenever I have vmware running. I will follow your advice. Best regards, Alex. On Wed, 22 Oct 2003, Jim Cunning wrote:

Hi List,
This is a P-III 950 MHz, 640 MB RAM system running SuSE 8.2 stock and patchd with the latest upgrade packages. I run 16 desktops on kde with all of them having at least one or two application windows open, vmware and a win98 guest being one of them. Occasionally I experience the lack of screensaver action. For no apparent reason the screensaver stops kicking in after its prescribed 5 minutes. When I restart kde everything is fine ... for a couple of days until the problem reappears. Has anybody else seen this behavior? Where should I start to probe and trouble shoot?
Thanks for any pointers, ALex.
Your problem is probably caused by vmWare. Whenever I stay in my vmware window longer than the screensaver timeout period, the kde screensaver process starts, but cannot clear the screen, due to some way that vmware grabs the keyboard and xserver I've heard. There may be a version of vmware that doesn't exhibit this problem, but I don't have it.
My solution is to kill all 'desktop_lock' processes manually after I leave the vmware window. Rebooting and/or restarting of KDE is not necessary.
