I have a P4C800 Asus board with a 160 gb Seagate SATA drive. When I insert the boot disk to do an nfs install of 8.2 It gets all the way to ide device driver while it is loading the kernal and then freezes. It seems to not like that fact that I don't have a regualr ide drive attached. I have gone into bios and told it that SATA is the primary drive. Has anyone had any experience here that could help me or is Suse 8.2 just not capable right now of installing on a computer that only has a SATA drive
Intel 865GLC with onboard intel SATA and SATA drive, SuSE 8.2 does not recognise the controller at all. Doesn't even see that there is one. Here's what I did: -Install SuSE 8.2 on another machine with PATA drive. -Compile 2.4.22 vanilla kernel, install and edit grub to show it -stick PATA drive in new machine, boot off it. Kernel should now see and be able to use SATA controller and drive. -make partitions on new drive, copy SuSE over, edit /etc/fstab on the new drive, as well as /boot/grub/menu.lst - you have to add ide=reverse kernel param. - remove PATA drive, boot off SuSE CD. Wait for installer to load, Ctr+Alt+F2 to console, chroot to SuSE partition on new disc - Yast2 - bootloader. Check that all settings are fine and tell it to update the mbr. Well, that's what it came down too - lots of fiddling inbetween to figure out what to do next :-) Hans
