Hi all. I'm running SuSE 8.2 on a DELL Inspiron 2650 laptop. It had an NVidia GeForce 2 Go video chip. I've installed the NVidia binary drivers. I get fairly decent 3D performance out of it if you consider the age and genre of the system. There is something about refresh rates or modes that just *bugs* me sometimes. Let me lay out what I've seen: If using the SuSE supplied nvidia driver, which has no 3D and it a fairly generic driver, I am able to use Atl-Ctrl-F1 to switch to a _readable_ console from the XFree86 session. I can also switch back. I get the same results using framebuffer drivers. The display is quite viewable even on an external monitor. The Inspiron has a button I can press that will cycle display between LCD/Monitor;LCD Only;Monitor Only. When I use the NVidia driver, I get 3D performance in XFree86 screens just fine. If I try to Alt-Ctrl-F1 to switch to a console, the console on the LCD goes beserk, wavey lines and scrambled signals. Kinda like a TV tuned to 15 channels at once. If I have an external monitor plugged in, the monitor doesn't have this symptom at all. Not much of an issue when I am in my office, but when I am on the road and would like to switch to console, or even when shutting down and X halts, the console goes wild with goofy patterns and lines, et all. I'm pretty much done with trying experimentation with my X configuration to try and resolve this, but thought I would post this in case anyone else has run across this and either knows the answer or can now rest assured you are not suffering alone. The machine I am writing this message from has a GeForce4 and preforms flawlessly, but then it isn't a laptop suffering from a manufacturer messing with video chipsets. ---- John Hiemenz --- Pine v4.5.3 --- SuSE Linux Pro v8.2 --- Registered Linux User #201684 Machine # 214067 Running Madly Into The Wind And Screaming
