Have you set the no proxy for gwdg.de or any of the other apt servers via yast (I assume it is yast -> network -> proxy).
No - this part is OK.
More info the file: /usr/share/doc/packages/apt/examples/configure-index, that explain pure apt proxy settings. In the next release of synaptic proxy settings can be configured using the gui....

I followed your suggestion and edited the conf file properly. But, I am still unable to do the update. The problem I have here is that I am forced to use http proxy, port 8080, only. There is no ftp proxy on this network! I can do ftp only via http - e.g. through web browser or such... I also managed to use fou4s and wget for downloads, but with apt/synaptic I have no luck so far. I noticed that apt/synaptic calls ftp program during "update list" process. It seems that I have to find the way to make ftp work through http proxy...I mean, to force synaptic update list to make an HTTP URL request instead of FTP URL request. Can you tell me what I am supposed to put in ftp section of my apt.conf file? I tried both Proxy "ftp://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:8080"; and Proxy "http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:8080"; but without success...
