Brian, Don't know if this would fix your problem completely, but just wanted to offer it as a suggestion. Update your kernel and I think you might find that you will get better Firewire support. I know the firewire and USB2 support in your version kernel were still young.

I just ran a fsck on the drive that has the mount error and this is what I get:

According to the man page, --rebuild-tree is rather evasive, and I don't know if I really want to run this. What are the ramifications of --rebuild-tree?

I think I would skip anymore of this, until I was sure I was getting a good mount on the unit. I am certainly not an expert, but running fix on a disk that there is nothing on or nothing wrong with, is probably not a good idea. Once it's mounted correctly, I think you will find it works just like any other hard disk on the system.
